The use of herbs and herbal products has been practiced regularly in Asia,Africa and America much older than the known civilization in the Europe and U.S.A. Only recently have the Proponents of Medicine accepted in open the superiority of Herbs as cures. Of late Consumer surveys consistently find that nearly half of all Mankind use herbs for cure. A statistic that is particularly remarkable when we realize that today's herbal products "industry" is just over a quarter century old. Earlier and still very much prevalent it was and is just the Granny”s treatment .In spite of this widespread acceptance of herbal products in individual self-care choices, misconceptions exist as to the regulation, safety and effectiveness of herbal products.

    Q. Why should We use herbal products?

Some important things to remember about natural medicines as opposed to prescription drugs is that more time is typically required to see results. Healing, the natural way, goes to the core of the problem where much of western medicine deals with the cessation of symptoms. To the Naturopath, symptoms are seen as clues to the problem of origin, and not as something to be treated but to be monitored as treatment progresses. Of course, in some cases, temporary relief of symptoms is called for, if one has to work or cannot afford to take time off to let the body do it's job of naturally dealing with imbalances. The problem in our society is that we've begun to depend on the "quick fix" of the antacid, the headache remedy, the sleeping pill, or the nerve pill, instead of dealing with the core imbalances.
The decision to use herbs for their health promoting value is, as with all health decisions, a personal one. There are, however, many good reasons to consider herbal products as a complete and genuine health cure. The best reason, however, may be the fact that herbs and herbal products, with their incredibly wide use throughout time and place, continue to provide real health benefits while maintaining a remarkable safety profile. Readily available natural substances were the first medicines used by humans. Primitive and ancient civilizations as well as contemporary cultures throughout the world have always relied on herbs to provide the benefits that have been observed with their use.

    Q. How to ensure that herbs be safe?

Plants that enjoy broad culinary and therapeutic usage are generally safe. We can flavor our food with any number of herbs to make a meal more flavorful. We can appreciate a delicious cup of peppermint leaf or ginger root tea, or benefit from the soothing properties of marshmallow root or the bark of slippery elm. We can take an herbal supplement containing dandelion root or saw palmetto berries, or any number of the other herbs. Although allergies and reactions have been recorded for a few herbs that are widely used in foods and supplements, such individual concerns are also seen with many foods, and do not diminish the safety profile of the many herbs that are generally recognized as safe.
A introduction into natural medicines and healing is the same everywhere. It should start with an exploration in the use of vitamins, minerals and herbs. You soon discover that You really like the effect of these natural approaches to healing far better than their prescription counterparts and eventually decided to work with them exclusively, to stay healthy. From this decision it soon came to be a way of life.
Please remember that this information is given for educational purposes only. You do not diagnose or prescribe but only share holistic options for wellness that many are seeking in today's world. The tips You readon this site have come from personal experience in the use of herbal remedies by people over ages and are not to be construed as replacing any current medication or regimen suggested by your doctor. It is our hope that you've chosen a physician who is open to natural supplementation.

    Q. How efficient is Herbal cure visavis other Medicine systems?
One of the more dangerous dependencies we've developed is a dependence on antibiotics. What has happened over time is that viruses and bacteria have developed ways to survive stronger and stronger antibiotics and some holistic healthcare providers believe that it may not be long until even the strongest available antibiotic will not be effective. We must learn to support our natural defense system, give it the nutrition it needs to stay healthy, and deal with our emotional, mental and spiritual lives in a more healthy way.

To focus on ways to use herbs effectively for health and wellness every one has to find his individual way out. Of course same guidelines could be used when choosing to work with other natural approaches, such as vitamins, minerals, etc

Q.how do I begin and get started on herbal treatment?

Whenever You decide to take a new substance into your body system, for the purpose of healing or correcting some condition, You understand that You have decided to self-medicate. This is your right, and it is also your responsibility. You have come to realize that any substance at all can cause an allergic reaction (many people are allergic to peanut butter, wheat, milk, and other common foods, for example), and that the most important time for paying attention is the first three days You add something new.
Some things You have to learn to notice are your physical energy level, any changes in breathing, temperature, skin color, itching or rash-like symptoms, dizziness, and your mental/emotional state.

    Q. How to decide on best combination of herbs?
Determining whether or not to continue taking a formula is sometimes a little tricky in some cases because when a person begins taking a detox formula, the symptoms of necessary internal cleansing can be the same as allergic reactions. The skin is our largest eliminatory organ and can respond to a big release of toxins by temporarily developing rash-like symptoms. Also, detoxing often does temporarily tax the entire system (due to toxins being released and having to be flushed out through the skin, liver, spleen, kidneys and colon) and can create feelings of fatigue, depression, etc.

Generally the way to know for sure that whatever reactions You have are not allergic in nature is to start with a very low dosage and work your way up to the recommended dosage. By starting with a very low dosage -- too low for rapid detox to be a factor -- at least, for 2-3 days, You can eliminate allergic reaction and side effects as reasons for any symptoms. For example, if You were to take a herbal juice, and the dosage was 15 spoons three times a day, You might start with five spoons, once a day. Then, after a day or two, You increase to two times daily, then three. You only increase dosage after You have reached three doses per day. You do this because the efficiency of the medicine is in great part dependent on the medicine being in the system continually. Until You get up to three doses a day, that doesn't happen. After You'm sure the continual dose is not causing a problem, then You feel it is safe to increase. This method is a simple one which we can use to employ mainly when taking those formulas containing many herbs or those designed for heavy detox. Single herbs have rarely posed a problem for me.

    Q. How soon can I expect to notice the benefits of an herbal product?
Herbs definitely take longer to create relief of some symptoms and conditions than some of their pharmaceutical counterparts. Look at all the antacids, for example. All offer near-instant relief and some even promise to stop heartburn BEFORE it starts; yet, none of them promise to eliminate the condition that is causing the heartburn to keep coming back. The big difference between those types of products and herbal medicines is the focus. The focus of herbal medicine is to create a healthy environment in the body system, rebuild, cleanse, and permanently heal.

The primary focus of "quick-fix" medicines is to relieve symptoms temporarily, such as pain, indigestion or depression. Relieving distressing symptoms is not necessarily a bad thing. If You've got terrible heartburn, for example, quick relief can be very valuable and You won't hesitate to chew a few antacid tablets if You don't have time to make some nice ginger tea for the same effect. However, if You fail to acknowledge that some imbalance of our total physical system, as well as some corresponding imbalance in our non-physical system (either mentally, emotionally, and/or spiritually) is causing you to manifest the symptoms and continue to treat those symptoms without dealing with the causative factors, then simple heartburn will eventually turn into something far more serious.

To completely balance an chronic or very serious condition in the holistic, herbal way, may take six months to a year. Usually, You see improvement within a week or so but each person's system is different so our advice would be to hang in there for at least a month or two (in the absence of allergic reactions, of course) before deciding that a certain regimen is not working for you. Also, just because one herb doesn't work, please don't decide that none of them will. In fact, most drugs have far more potential for allergic reaction than full plant herbal preparations, by far. Each person's chemistry and metabolic make-up is unique. You'd keep trying until you find the right combination and dosage. Therein is an important key to cure.

    Q. How much time should I continue with the herbal cure.
Whenever You take a strong detox formula, such as a total system cleanse or a colon cleanse program, You start even more slowly than with singles or tonic formulas and build up to maximum dosage. You try to begin at a time when You can rest--at least for the first two days after You start. You also skip a day every week or so, to give our body time to rest and renew.

In addition, You add tonic herbs like lemon balm to support our body and keep our energy level high. Drinking lots of water (and, even more important, spreading that water throughout the day so that You drink some at least every two hours) is a definite useful tool.

Taking more showers helps your skin eliminate more and reduces the chance of skin eruption from toxins being released. Brisk towel rubs are also something You do when cleansing, to help the skin release and to stimulate circulation and blood flow on the skin surface.

Working with herbs is a wonderful journey into natural health and wellness that, when approached with respect, responsibility and a sense of exploration can yield dividends for the rest of your days. You believe herbs provide a viable supplementation to traditional medicines and, for many are the preferred method of treatment. We're all adults here. Make wise choices; choices which work for you. Self treatment requires self-responsibility and monitoring. Don't try it if you aren't willing to explore, expand and learn what may now be new to you.

    Q. What about interactions with drugs?

Humans have been learning about the diverse effects of ingesting plants throughout our evolution. We have, by trial and error, found both good and bad effects that are related to specific plants, some of which we use as food, and others that are used for therapeutic purposes. The introduction of synthetic and highly purified drugs is an extremely modern development. As researchers observe the interactions that drugs have with common foods and herbs, surprises continue to surface.
As a thumb rule, the effect of a drug can be either increased or decreased in the presence of other factors in the diet, including herbal use. Although it is likely that most such factors have little or no influence on drug metabolism, continued research will add to our knowledge of such interactions and responsible food and supplement manufacturers will be expected to inform their customers of any new findings. There is now an ongoing interest in other drugs that are suspected of interacting with certain specific herbs, with most contemporary emphasis on the use of herbs with blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin. Although the current concerns are either conceptual or based on isolated and inconclusive reports, it is advisable to inform your prescribing physician or pharmacist that you are using herbs when undergoing any drug therapy. As close monitoring of the effect of warfarin is an established standard of medical practice, this additional information will assist your physician in maintaining good supervision of your drug levels. In order to understand the potential for an herbal product to interact with prescription drugs, it may also be useful to consult with a qualified herbal expert

    Q. Should I tell my Doctor that I'm using herbs?
Of course you should! And because your doctor is, ideally, your primary partner in managing your health, you should insist that your doctor, no matter their degree of training in herbs, receive that information respectfully. In telling your doctor of your decision to use an herbal product, however, don't be surprised if you find that your knowledge of herbs is more advanced than theirs. You might suggest (again, respectfully) that they expand their education by using some of the internet resources listed below, or by purchasing and studying some of the written references identified there. At the same time, remember that your prescribing physician has a responsibility to safely oversee your use of any prescription drugs. If your doctor is concerned that a pharmaceutical substance might interact with an herbal product, it is prudent to accept such advice.
